Name: Christopher Rain
Company: Arch Insurance (Canada)
Role/Title: Role: Claims Department Manager Title: AVP Claim
University/Degree/Training: University of Western Ontario: BSc. (Math) DHS and MA (both in Economics)
Why did you choose the insurance industry?
I think the Insurance industry chose me. I do not know many people in this industry who grew up looking to enter the field of Insurance. My father was a Claims Manager and I simply applied to an interesting position (Claims Examiner – Specialty Lines) through a head-hunter he knew. I thought that claims arising out of Employee Theft, malpractice, professional errors, and board of director’s decisions, sounded interesting and I am happy to say that I was right.
What have you done in your career so far?
My career has spanned 10 years working in Claims, Underwriting and Product Development. I have worked in Manhattan heading an international claims department with team members located in Toronto, Paris, London, Johannesburg and Sydney reporting to me. I have travelled throughout the United State and Canada as well as London and Paris on Claims or Marketing related business. In my current role, I am ultimately responsible for the claims function for the Canada branch.
What do you do in a typical working day?
There is no typical work day. In the claims world, we review losses from car accidents, to Multimillion dollar fires to medical malpractice lawsuits. We assess each on the basis of policy coverage. We are then responsible to retain experts including lawyers, forensic accountants and investigators to gather background information and/or protect the rights of policy holders. As a manager, I must ensure that my staff adheres to these practices as well. If you want a brief description, I am a problem solver.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I like knowing that I can play an integral part in protecting our policy holders from potential financial ruin. We replace building and equipment worth millions of dollars and defend lawsuits that cost hundreds of thousands just to defend. Think about it, if your house burned down tomorrow, could you afford to rebuild it without insurance? More on a personal note; I have been exposed to a variety of cultures and to foods that I otherwise would have never tried. The people in this industry are genuine as well.
